The Australian School of Business at UNSW in collaboration with the China Scholarship Council is offering up to 12 scholarships each year to outstanding students from Chinese universities.

The PhD Program:
This is the premier collaborative program. Candidates complete a 3 year program at UNSW consisting of coursework and a thesis and graduate with a UNSW PhD degree. It is open for application by students who are in the final year of a research masters program, or have completed a research masters program at or have been admitted to a nominated Chinese University’s Doctoral program at the time of application.

We particularly welcome nominations from the following universities:

  • Peking University
  • Renmin University
  • Fudan University
  • Shanghai JiaoTong University
  • Nanjing University
  • Shanghai University of Finance and Economics
  • Tianjin University
  • Wuhan University
  • Xiamen University
  • Students enrolling in this 3 year program will complete up to 2 semesters of coursework preparation and a thesis proposal plus submit a thesis of around 80,000 words which will be examined by 3 examiners. Students will undertake the entire program at UNSW in one of the following disciplines:

    Upon successful completion of the program, the student will graduate with a UNSW PhD degree.

    Visiting Doctoral Students Program:
    This new program falls under the CSC “5000 PhD scholarships program”. Candidates accepted by the Australian School of Business complete a 1.5 year program at UNSW consisting of coursework and a thesis and graduate with a UNSW MPhil degree. It is open for application by students who have completed a bachelor degree in a relevant discipline and have been admitted to a nominated Chinese University’s Doctoral program at the time of application.

    Students enrolling in this 1.5 year program will complete 4 courses plus submit a thesis of around 40,000 words which will be examined by 2 examiners. Students may choose from one of 11 specialised programs:

    Upon successful completion of the UNSW program, students will be awarded a UNSW MPhil degree. Students will then return to their home institution in China to complete their PhD studies where they will graduate with a PhD from their home institution.

    Conditions for Both Programs:
    Eligibility:
    Students must satisfy the eligibility conditions of the CSC as well as those of the Australian School of Business.

    Commencement:

    Students may commence either of the programs in July 2008 or March 2009.

    Scholarship Funding

    Successful applicants will be awarded a scholarship for study commencing in either July 2008 or March 2009. The scholarships will provide

    • the cost of full tuition fees for the duration of the program (3 years for PhD, 1.5 years for Visiting Doctoral students program)
    • visa application fees (the scholarship covers e-visa charges where the student applies for a visa for July admission via the IDP offices in Beijing, Guangzhou or Shanghai; for March entry the scholarship covers the cost of a standard visa application)
    • overseas student health cover and return economy airfares
    • a CSC living allowance for the duration of the program
    • a supplementary living allowance of $5000 p.a. funded by the Australian School of Business, UNSW

    Applicants must send the following documents to the Australian School of Business, UNSW:

    • Completed UNSW application form
    • Academic transcripts for all previous degrees
    • Resume/curriculum vitae
    • a well-developed research proposal which should demonstrate:
      • Clear aims and objectives
      • Some understanding of the literature in the area
      • Some consideration of method
      • A good command of the English language
      • That you are capable of independent and critical thinking
    • IELTS score if available

    English Language Requirement
    To be eligible for entry at UNSW plus satisfy the Australian Government’s student visa requirements, students must provide satisfactory results from an IELTS test undertaken no more than two years prior to the intended commencement date of the UNSW program. An overall minimum score of 6.5 is required together with a minimum score of at least 6.0 in each of the subtests of listening, reading, speaking and writing.

    Only eligible applicants who have satisfied the English requirement can be recommended for a UNSW/CSC scholarship. Intending applicants should arrange to sit an IELTS test as soon as possible. The deadline for submission of a satisfactory IELTS test result is Friday 7 March 2008. When organising to sit an IELTS test please ensure that you allow sufficient time for the test score to be reported by this date.

    Closing Date
    Usually the closing date for applications to reach the CSC is March 20 2008. By that time, applicants will have to be assessed and accepted by UNSW, and a shortlist prepared.

    In order for UNSW to meet this deadline, applicants must lodge their completed UNSW application forms with the Australian School of Business by Friday 25 January 2008.
