The Food Security Center (FSC) is a newly established university center of excellence in development collaboration at the University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart, Germany. FSC is one of five excellence centers of the program “exceed – Higher Education Excellence in Development Cooperation”, which is supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) with funds of the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) of Germany. FSC’s mission is to make effective and innovative scientific contributions in research, teaching, and policy advice to eradicate hunger and achieve food security in collaboration with partner Higher Education Institutions in Africa, Asia, and Latin America and national and international development and research organizations. Thematically, FSC’s activities deal with issues of sustainable food availability, food access, food use, and food utilization. More information is available from www.foodsecurity.de.

FSC awards up to 29 scholarships for PhD students and postdoctoral researchers for a period of 4 to 36 months, starting April 15, 2010. The Center wishes to attract outstanding PhD students and postdoctoral fellows pursuing a career in academia or development collaboration. The scholarships aim at increasing their previously gained scientific knowledge and skills relevant to food security related issues. Furthermore, FSC aims at establishing an active, long-lasting collaboration with the supported researchers and their home institutions.

FSC offers three categories of scholarships:

Sandwich scholarships for PhD students (6 months)

Research scholarships for visiting postdoctoral researchers (4 months)

Excellence scholarships for FSC-supported PhD program “Young Excellence School” (36 months)

In category 1 and 2, FSC scholarships will support researchers from developing countries to conduct their research either at the University of Hohenheim (South – North) or at a national or international research institute in a developing country, for instance one of the centers of the CGIAR (South – South). There are few scholarships for students and postdoctoral researchers of the University of Hohenheim to visit a research institute in a developing country (North – South).

The application deadline for all scholarships in category 1 and 2 is January 30, 2010. Selection is carried out on a competitive basis and the decisions will be communicated up to March 16, 2010. Regarding the details of the different scholarships, the application process and the requirements, please consult FSC’s webpage (www.foodsecurity.de ).

Interdisciplinary PhD and Postdoc Research Assistant at the Wilhelm-Schickard-Institute for Computer Science of Universität Tübingen

Effective January 2010, the Database Systems Chair (Prof. Dr. Torsten Grust) at the Wilhelm-Schickard-Institute for Computer Science of Universität Tübingen (Germany), opens a position for a Research Assistant (PhD student or Postdoc level, full-time) in an interdisciplinary research project.

Declarative Languages for the Exploration of Large Network Data
In collaboration with colleagues in the cognitive and social sciences as well psychology we are working on new approaches to the analysis of, potentially huge, network data. We are particularly interested in network structures that result from communication and interaction on the Web 2.0 (social networks, discussion boards, collaborative tagging sites, wikis, etc.).

To enable non-computer scientists to creatively work with such huge data sets, this project will develop “declarative database languages for the exploration and analysis of network data structures”.

Your work will build on our group’s prior research efforts: the database-supported evaluation of XQuery (pathfinder-xquery.org, monetdb-xquery.org), LINQ (ferry-lang.org), and modern scripting languages (e.g., Ruby). Further relevant technology includes database distribution and MapReduce (offline evaluation of non-local social network properties) or the import of external network data via, e.g., Google’s OpenSocial API or RSS feeds.

Requirements
We are looking forward to grow our team and welcome applications of highly motivated candidates with an excellent university degree (Master in Computer Science or a closely related field) who are willing to support our upcoming research efforts. We expect you to be open for collaboration with non-computer scientists. Last but not least, we hope that you like systems building as much as we do.

The position has no teaching obligations — if you would like to get involved with teaching nevertheless, please let us know.
Good knowledge of German as well as English (research and publication) are a requirement.
Job Details and Application

Successful candidates will sign a contract with the Universität Tübingen under the current regulations applicable to employees in Public Service (TVÖD). This is a three-year full-time position.

You will be working in Tübingen, the traditional university town in the Neckar valley (Stuttgart region). Our group offers an informal, open, and fun working environment.

Universität Tübingen aims at increasing the number of female employees and thus especially welcomes applications of female candidates.

Applications of disabled candidates will be given priority, depending on their suitability.
Please send your complete application in PDF format via e-mail to Prof. Dr. Torsten Grust. The deadline for applications is November 30, 2009.

One Post-Doc position and three PhD scholarships

The Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe in a Global Context: Shifting Asymmetries in Cultural Flows” at the University of Heidelberg is offering one Post-Doc position and three PhD scholarships within the project “Hidden grammars of Transculturality – Migrations of Encyclopaedic Knowledge and Power”, Research Area “History and Historicities”.

The project “Hidden Grammars” focuses on encyclopaedia as tools of knowledge administration. While they appear as stable forms reflecting a univalent canon, they may become catalysts of change not just in translation. Idealized self-descriptions call them “universal and all-encompassing,” but they are knowledge containers constrained by the particular cultural and historical circumstances of their own creation.
Probing into questions of readership, production processes and visions of self and other, by studying elements crucial in showing cultural and power asymmetries such as gender, illustrations and biographical writing and their role in travelling and stationary encyclopedia in Europe and Asia, we hope to be able to reconstruct the peculiar «mentalités» which made possible the creation and favourable reception of some encyclopaedia but not others. In analysing encyclopaedia as global source material, we would like to re-evaluate them not as mere products of book history but as important social agents in the making of historicities between Asia and Europe. Further information on the encyclopaedia project can be found here.

Research in this project will be organised in joint research teams, where both Asian and European language competence is always available, either as a form of cooperation between two persons or, if possible when available as one person with language competence in different fields. Ideally, positions would be given to specialists in 4 regions (China, Japan, India, Europe) who would each work on at least 2 of the 3 research foci (gender, biographies, illustrations).

Deadline: All positions are open until filled, jobs will start April 1st or as soon as possible thereafter. They are awarded for 2 years with possibility of renewal for another year.

Please send your CV, copies of university degrees, and a draft of your post-doc project/PhD projects outline (max. 2 pages) in electronic form to Prof. Dr. Madeleine Herren (m.herren@urz.uni-heidelberg.de) and Prof. Dr. Barbara Mittler (bmittler@sino.uni-heidelberg.de).

Outstanding candidates with a background in one of the following disciplines Psychology, Economics, Sociology and Applied Ethics who are interested in interdisciplinary research are invited to apply for Post-Doc Scholarships at the Jena Graduate School Human Behaviour in Social and Economic Change (GSBC).

The Jena Graduate School is supported by the School of Social and Behavioural Sciences, the School of Economics and Business Administration, and the Max Planck Institute of Economics. The common research approach within the GSBC is interdisciplinary oriented and addresses the analyses of human behaviour with respect to social and economic change.

We are particularly interested in the analysis of individual as well as collective behaviour and decisions that lead to change, or adapt and even resist to change at the level of individuals, groups, industries, regions and countries. Our major concerns are the dynamics of these behaviours and/or decisions and their interrelatedness, as well as the underlying, often feedback driven, mechanisms of change. We investigate these phenomena from different disciplinary angles, which taken together provide a better understanding of social and economic change. Methods include analytical models, controlled experiments, empirical and field studies and historical investigations.

From applicants we expect a sustained research interest in one of the following four interdisciplinary research areas:

Responses to accelerated change

Innovation as intended change

Changing social and economic contexts and changing identities

Change across the lifespan

For further information on the research programme as well as on the application requirements please visit www.gsbc.uni-jena.de.

Fellowships start any time (Deadline for application: March 31st, 2009). The Post-Doc scholarships include funding for 2 years. The language of the GSBC is English.

The job advertisements and the application form are available at http://www.gsbc.uni-jena.de/index.php?id=9.
