The following PhD project has been created under the auspices of the India-UK Advanced Technology Centre (IU-ATC) of Excellence in Next Generation Networks Systems and Services (www.iu-atc.com). During the lifetime of the project there may be opportunities to spend a period of time as part of a related internship at BT Adastral Park in Martlesham, UK. Further opportunities may exist to visit research partners in India (as part of IUATC initiative) and UAE (as part of BT’s EBTIC initiative, see www.ebtic.org). The successful candidate should therefore be willing to travel and spend some time overseas as part of the research project. Arrangements for the internship / visits will be made by the supervisory team of the PhD project.

Project Specification:
As nations strive to develop their digital economies to take advantage of cost efficiencies and new services afforded by Next Generation Networks and associated Internet Applications, there is increased pressure to provide adequate communications transport infrastructure that will deliver these new services at appropriate levels of performance, security, carbon footprint and financial cost. The strategies used for the design and deployment of these services across fixed and wireless physical communications infrastructure and providing for their distribution, storage and processing requirements does result in variations of customer acceptability and experience. These differences can be brought about due to vendor equipment, geography, availability, access rights, security considerations, resilience, fault tolerance and performance/cost of maintaining the underlying network links, elements, data centres, base stations and exchanges. Moreover, the method of access over fixed or wireless infrastructure can cause major fluctuations in service delivery and end-user QoE. Coupled with these issues are mitigations against underlying threats and faults in the physical elements themselves and their power supply.

Research Aims:
Wireless Sensors Networks can be deployed to assist in the monitoring function to detect and report faults and SLA-flapping as part of the Network Management Control Plane functions. Such WSNs can be integrated across major critical communications infrastructure to form a Wireless-Sensor Cloud that exchanges performance and component health status data in a virtualised environment.

Within this project there will be a key focus on the design of WS-Cloud architectures and light-weight middleware to provide for the on-demand and autonomic message passing protocols in support of data fusion techniques.

Key design targets will provide for efficient real-time data transfer between ad-hoc-WSNs that form in the wireless access cloud and for fixed deployments that form part of the metro/core infrastructure. A key outcome of the research will be a unique architecture that can be scalable to large number of SNs with differing data capture and exchange/fusion protocols.

Whilst the techniques designed will have direct application for critical communications infrastructure, it is hoped that aspects of the new design will have application and relevance to other utilities such as the distribution networks for gas, oil, water and power.

Applications Process and Candidate Eligibility:
All applicants should hold a first or upper second class honours degree in Computer Science, Electronic Engineering or a cognate area. It is desirable that candidates will have a Masters degree in a subject related to Telecommunications Networking and have a good understanding of statistical / mathematical modelling and telecommunications protocols. Suitable candidates will preferably have an MSc in Telecommunications or a related area. Experience of Wireless Sensor Networking (WSN), distributed and parallel computing and real-time networks communications protocols would be desirable as will be skills on modeling, simulation and multi-modal data fusion and development languages such as Java and/or C++.

Whilst this PhD Award is open to local and international candidates, in the context of the IU-ATC we would especially welcome applications from suitably qualified candidates from India. Successful candidates will enrol on a full-time programme of research studies leading to the award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.

The studentship will comprise fees and an annual stipend of £13,290. It will be awarded for a period of up to three years subject to satisfactory progress and is tenable in the School of Computing and Information Engineering at the Coleraine Campus, Northern Ireland, UK.

The closing date for receipt of completed applications is 28th February 2010.

Further, it will be necessary for candidate to be eligible to obtain an appropriate visa to the UK as defined by the UK Borders Agency: www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk

For further information on the application process please visit our website: http://www.compeng.ulster.ac.uk/rgs/. Please follow the guidance notes regarding the completion of the application form.

An annual studentship competition for the best and brightest in informatics and computing

SICSA offers up to 20 prize studentships per year to the very best students from anywhere in the world. Our aim is to attract the research leaders of the future, whatever their nationality or place of residence, to come and work with us in Scotland.

Each SICSA student will spend 3 to 4 years as part of a programme coordinated across the partners. These students will catalyze new collaborations across the research community, and lead the next generation of excellent computing researchers.

In 2010, we will be offering up to 20 SICSA prize studentships, across Scotland. We are looking for outstanding applicants in any area of computer science and informatics. We are particularly interested in applications from students who want to work in one of the SICSA research themes.

SICSA prize studentships are funded jointly by the Scottish Funding Council (SFC) and the university where the studentship is held. They are worth around £18,000 per year for 3.5 years. This includes support for living expenses of around £13,000, research expenses and postgraduate fees at the level charged to students who are UK/EU residents.

Additional support may be available to students who are not UK/EU residents and who would normally be required to pay the full postgraduate fee. The level of this support, however, depends on individual universities and cannot be guaranteed.

SICSA is committed to Scottish research collaboration, including excellent researchers in smaller groups as well as those in larger units. Studentships are therefore available at all Scottish Universities that are members of SICSA.

To reinforce the collaborative nature of SICSA, each studentship will involve cross-site supervision. Formally, however, each student would be registered in the traditional manner, at a single degree-awarding institution.

Applying for a SICSA prize studentship
The Scottish Graduate Academy offers prize studentships to excellent candidates from across the world. There is no residence qualification and candidates from any country may apply.

We are willing to consider applicants in any area of computer science and informatics but may give preference to students who are working in SICSA theme areas:

Next-generation Internet

Multi-modal interaction

Modelling and abstraction

Complex systems engineering

Some universities would like to recruit students for specific projects and information about these projects is available here. However, your application does not have to be related to any of these projects and you may make a research proposal in any area of work.

Students must have or must expect to be awarded a 1st class honours degree, an MSc with Distinction or equivalent GPA scores. We will normally reject your application if you have not achieved this level of qualification.

How to apply
Applications for 2010 studentships should be made on-line using the On-line Application System. You must register with our application system before submitting an application. Please read the instructions below BEFORE filling in the form and make sure that you have all the information that we need.

You may list up to three Scottish universities that you would like to consider your application. You must submit an application to your preferred (1st choice) University, using their application procedures, and your SICSA prize studentship application will not be considered until you have done this. You do not need to submit an application to your 2nd or 3rd choices universities – we will contact you if necessary about these.

Your SICSA prize studentship application MUST include:

details of your undergraduate qualifications (and MSc qualifications if you have them)

your preferred SICSA Institution/s.

a copy of the transcript of your marks, which you must upload as an attachment

a research proposal, which you must upload as an attachment

You may include details of any industrial experience you have which is relevant to your application and your SICSA research proposal and you may upload a list of publications (if you have had any of your work published.

You will not be asked to upload copies of your references, nor submit details of your referees. If a university wishes to nominate you for a SICSA studentship, they will forward the references they have received as part of your application to the Graduate Academy Board.

To be considered in March 2010, applications must be received by the deadline of 28th February 2010. Remember, you have to fill in both a university application form and a SICSA prize studentship application form.

Tentative Application Deadline : 28 February 2010

LIDC is contributing thousands of pounds towards field costs for five three-year PhD Studentships. The funds will support research projects in a range of innovative and specialised areas including using mobile phones to help monitor infectious disease, analysing sexual behaviour among young women in South Africa, and exploring land and legal issues in post-conflict countries in Africa. They will supplement the five development Studentships, out of a total of 13 Studentships, offered by The Bloomsbury Colleges. Each development project – Studentship plus field costs – is worth more than £60,000.

Successful applicants will begin their PhDs in September/October 2010 as part of the scheme run by The Bloomsbury Colleges (a consortium made up of Birkbeck, Institute of Education, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Royal Veterinary College, School of Oriental and African Studies, and The School of Pharmacy). Each student will be guided by two academics – a lead supervisor from one of the Bloomsbury Colleges and a collaborating supervisor from another. This joint supervision approach will promote interdisciplinary research, a primary aim of LIDC. The Colleges, via the consortium, will provide Studentships to include tuition fees and a stipend. LIDC is committed to contributing a total of approximately £31,000 towards the field research costs across the five development Studentships.

Background
The Bloomsbury PhD Studentships were created to promote cross-College collaboration, particularly in areas likely to benefit from interdisciplinary work. They are awarded every year for a range of topics, including international development.

Click here for more information and to apply. The Studentships cover the cost of UK/EU tuition fees and a maintenance stipend. Applications are welcome from students of all nationalities. The deadline for applications is 1 March 2010.
