6 MSc Biophotonics Studentships - Lancaster University

For UK citizens provides a stipend and payment of fees, and fees only for citizens of other EU states. Students from countries outside of the EU are not eligible for these studentships.

The area of biophotonics is increasingly being recognised by both research councils and the government as a niche area of growth in science. Tools developed in the area of photonics have potential applications in areas as diverse as healthcare usage to environmental monitoring. This degree scheme allows students with one particular background (e.g., physics or biology) to bridge the gap into the other subject area. The rationale is to allow them to acquire the understanding that will facilitate the future translation of tools developed in the physical sciences, often at the nano-scale, to address biological problems.

Students will gain a thorough understanding of the fundamental principles of photonics and will be able to apply their inter-disciplinary expertise to the application of emerging technology platforms in a novel way to biological problems. They will develop strong analytical and data-handling skills. Future employment prospects would be within academia and industry.

PhD studentship: Automated Face Recognition
Machine Vision Laboratory
University of West of England

The position, supported by an EPSRC doctoral award, will be concerned with the development of innovative 3D facial recognition techniques. The project is closely related to a large EPSRC project currently underway to develop robust facial recognition technology based on 3D representations of the human face captured using photometric stereo. The PhD project will aim to advance the state of the art in the field by devising novel ways to deduce identity from 3D face data using hardware and techniques developed here at UWE’s Machine Vision Laboratory.

The laboratory’s current work is being undertaken in collaboration with Imperial College, the Home Office (Scientific Development Branch), General Dynamics UK Ltd and Identity Solutions Ltd and offers a unique opportunity to work within a motivated team in an exciting and topical multidisciplinary field. Further information relating to the work can be found at: http://www.uwe.ac.uk/cems/research/groups/mvl/projects/photoface.html. It is expected that the work will be published in journals and/or presented at international conferences.

Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering
University College London

A PhD studentship in Autonomic Communications is available following the award of recent European Union FP7 research grants. We are looking to recruit a high calibre PhD student to work in this emerging area of high importance.

Given new services and applications that impose increasing demands on the underlying network infrastructure, increased user mobility and also the emergence of wireless devices that can form spontaneous large scale “on-demand” networks, it is largely uncontested that the initial Internet design no longer fits the requirements of the emerging network and services environment. Autonomic communications strive to ease the burden of managing complex future networks by designing them so that they are self-configuring, self-organizing, self-stabilizing, self-optimizing, self-healing and self-protecting. Such networks should be able to learn and adapt to their environment (changes in topology, technology, service demands, application context, etc) thus provide much needed flexibility and functional scalability.

The autonomic communications area encompasses relevant models and architectures, tools and techniques and enabling technologies and brings together algorithms for distributed decision making, context-awareness, programmable networks and policy-based systems, among other areas. Autonomic communications concepts apply to both fixed/cellular and infrastructure-less wireless networks (ad hoc, mesh, sensor).

The studentship available will be supported by the EMANICS (European Network of Excellence for the Management of Internet Technologies and Complex Services) and Auto-l (Autonomic Internet) projects. EMANICS is a network of excellence bringing together the most prominent European institutions in this area and UCL are leaders of the autonomic management work in the project. Auto-I aspires to find a solution for the future Internet based on autonomic principles, using resource virtualisation and self-management techniques and is aligned with the International Autonomic Communications Forum (ACF). As such, we are looking for candidates with both a good computer engineering background and analytical skills. Experience of research, design/development and evaluation on network management, network virtualisation, Linux, Java, C/C++ or similar would be desirable.
