[India] India Studies Program – Shastri Institute
The India Studies programme provides fellowships for Canadian scholars librarians and artists and Indian imprints are supplied to Canadian universities. The Department of Secondary Education and Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India provides programme funding. The purpose of the India Studies Programme is to promote understanding of India in Canada. India with its ancient civilization, rich history and heritage, mosaic of languages and cultures and post-colonial socio-economic developments has always been attractive to the scholars for diverse research activities and to the artists for cultural exchange.
Under Institute’s India Studies Programme, fellowships are provided to Canadian scholars, librarians and artists and Indian imprints are supplied to Canadian universities. In the past 40 years fellowships were awarded to 1300 Canadian faculty members, researchers and students to further their study of India and Indian languages. The Institute’s India office has been facilitating the affiliation process. So far the fellows have been affiliated with 113 prestigious Indian Institutions or renowned teachers of the arts in India.

FACULTY FELLOWSHIPS
Faculty Fellowships support research and training in India by Canadian scholars with full- or part-time appointments in a Canadian institution of higher education. Retired faculty who maintain affiliation with a Canadian institution of higher education are eligible to apply if upon return to Canada they will continue to contribute to India studies through either teaching or research. They are awarded on the basis of detailed proposals, which are peer reviewed.
Faculty Research
Faculty Research Fellowships are for scholars who have demonstrated excellence in a specific field of India studies.

Faculty Training
Faculty Training Fellowships are for scholars:
- who have had little or no previous involvement with India Studies and wish to undertake an intensive programme of study at an Indian institution,
- who wish to change their disciplinary focus within India Studies,
- who wish to develop or enhance their knowledge of an Indian Language,
- who wish to carry out comparative research in India.

Librarian
Librarian Fellowships are awarded to For Canadian university librarians to undertake:
- an intensive programme of study at an Indian Institution,
- enhancement of knowledge of and Indian Language, or
- enhancement of research support for south Asian studies.

Post-Doctoral
Post-doctoral Research Fellowships are open to scholars who have completed a Ph.D. and wish to do research in India. Applicants need not have an academic position. These awards will not normally be made if it has been greater than five years since completion of a doctoral degree.

STUDENT FELLOWSHIPS
Student Fellowships are awarded to students specializing in India entering or enrolled in a graduate degree programme.
Student Research
Student Research Fellowships enable Canadian citizens enrolled in master’s or doctoral programmes at institutions outside India to conduct research in India towards their degree. The Institute offers support only for the period spent in India and only for a maximum of one year. Students must affiliate with an Indian institution.

Fellowship for a graduate degree from an Indian University
Fellowships for a Graduate Degree from an Indian University assist students who wish to enroll in an Indian institution of higher learning to obtain a graduate degree. Students are encouraged to seek confirmation that the Government of India approves the proposed Indian institution as a degree-granting body and that their current Canadian university supports their proposed Indian programme and will allow transfer of credit. The applicant must have the support of the current chairperson of the department of study in Canada. Students should note that a Canadian University might not accept an Indian degree and courses as equivalent. The Institute may offer support for more than one year provided satisfactory standing and progress are maintained.

Student Language Training
Student Language Training Fellowships are awarded to students enrolled in graduate degree programmes outside of India who have taken training in an Indian language in Canada and wish to pursue advanced studies in that language in India. The award is normally for a period of twelve months and tenable only at recognized educational institutions that award appropriate diplomas or certificates.

ARTS FELLOWSHIPS
Artists at all stages of their career are welcome to apply.
Arts Fellowships
Arts Fellowships are for visual and performing artists who
- are recognized and emerging practitioners of an Indian art form and wish to undergo training or engage in related activity in India to improve their skills or expand their repertoire or,
- are not practitioners of an Indian art form but wish to undergo training in India in an Indian art form to develop their own work in new, interesting, and creative ways.
