[Ireland] PhD Studentship - National University of Ireland
PhD Studentship Computational Modelling of Indoor Air Pollution Exposure
The Centre for Climate Change & Air Pollution Studies (C-CAPS) and the School of Physics at NUI, Galway offers an opportunity to carry out doctoral research with an interdisciplinary team of researchers focusing in particular on computational modelling of air pollution exposure. This research is part of an innovative project, in which NUI, Galway is a partner, to undertake the development of a comprehensive model for predicting personal exposure to air pollution in an urban centre (i.e. Dublin city) and its satellite towns. The candidate’s specific duties will be to develop the indoor aspect of the computational model, so that population exposure can be predicted during building occupancy, based on infiltration of outdoor air pollution, indoor air pollution generation, population movement between indoors and outdoors, etc.
This is a 3 year full-time fully funded studentship to begin in October 2008. The studentship is funded through the Irish Environmental Protection Agency’s STRIVE Programme, and a stipend of approximately €16,000 per year is provided. Funds are also available to cover tuition fees at NUI, Galway, and some resources are provided for conference travel, etc. The successful candidate will be provided with research facilities and will join a dynamic team of researchers. The candidate will work under the supervision of Dr. Miriam Byrne in the School of Physics, and in close affiliation with researchers in the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering at Trinity College Dublin, who are the principal investigators for the project.
Qualifications:
Candidates will be expected to have:
- A good honours (first class or 2.1) degree in Physics, Computer Science, Engineering or a related discipline.
- High proficiency in the use of computer programming tools (such as C++ or Visual Basic, for example) and strong competency in the manipulation of spreadsheet packages such as Microsoft Excel
- A keen interest in environmental and air quality research
Applicants should submit a letter outlining their suitability for the position plus a full curriculum vitae including the names and contact details of two referees, by post to: Dr. Miriam Byrne, School of Physics, National University of Ireland, Galway, Ireland or by e-mail to miriam.byrne@nuigalway.ie
Closing date for receipt of applications is 5.00 p.m. on Friday, 22nd August 2008.
