The University of Trento, with the financial support of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Trento e Rovereto, announces the 27h cycle of the Doctoral School in International Studies.
The selection for 5 doctoral positions is announced. All the 5 positions will be assigned scholarships. The scholarships are issued by the University of Trento.

Duration: Three years

Official language: English. All doctoral students are encouraged to learn Italian during their studies.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Applications are invited from candidates, regardless of gender, age and nationality, who hold an Italian “laurea specialistica (magistrale)”, instituted in conformity with Ministerial Decree no. 509 of 3 November 1999 and subsequent amendments, a university degree of the previous regulations, or an equivalent degree obtained abroad. Applicants holding a foreign degree not officially recognized as equivalent to the Italian "laurea", must explicitly request recognition of equivalence in their application by including:

  1. the degree certificate or, in the case of E.U. citizens, a self-certification (according to Presidential
    Decree no. 445 of December 28, 2000);
  2. the English translation of the degree certificate with exams taken and grades obtained, signed under
    their own responsibility, to enable the Graduate School Committee to declare its equivalence, valid
    solely for the purpose of admission to the selection process.

Applications are also invited from students who expect to complete their degree by 1 October 2011. In such cases applicants must attach a declaration from their academic supervisor or the relevant faculty stating that the student is expected to complete the programme before the said deadline. Admission for candidates who have not graduated yet will be "conditional" and the applicant must present the relevant degree certificate, or a declaration that the degree has been conferred (in conformity with Presidential Decree no. 445 of December 28, 2000, applicable only to citizens of the European Union), by 5 October 2011. Otherwise, the applicant shall lose the right to be admitted to the School.

COURSE PROGRAMME

In the first semester of the first year, all students will be required to take:

  • International and European Law I (24 hours)

  • International Economics I (24 hours)

  • International and European Politics I (24 hours)

  • Methods and Concepts in International Studies I (24 hours)

  • Academic Writing for International Studies I (24 hours)

  • In the second semester of the first year, all students will be required to take:

  • International and European Law II (24 hours)

  • International Economics II (24 hours)

  • International and European Politics II (24 hours)

  • Methods and Concepts in International Studies II (24 hours)

  • Academic Writing for International Studies II (24 hours)

The first semester of the second year will be devoted to the preparation of the dissertation proposal. All doctoral students must defend their research proposal in a public examination. The student’s Advisory Committee (nominated by the Graduate School Committee) decides whether to approve the proposal and the presentation thereof. Continuation in the Doctoral Programme is conditional upon a positive evaluation by the Advisory Committee. Moreover, all the students will be required to take:

  • Proposal Writing for International Studies (24 hours)

The second semester of the second year will be devoted to the preparation of the dissertation proposal. Each student will be overseen by an Advisory Committee composed by the Thesis Supervisor and at least another member. The latter should preferably be involved in a different research area than the one the thesis is about.

In the second semester of the second year and/or the first semester of the third year, all students are required to spend a period abroad for research and study. For periods longer than six months, the approval of the Graduate School Committee is required. The third year will be dedicated primarily to researching and writing up the dissertation. The final results of the research will be submitted and discussed during a final Graduate Thesis Seminar. The Thesis Supervisor will decide whether to approve or reject the manuscript and admit the student to the Final Exam. During the second semester of the third year all the students will be required to take:

  • Thesis Seminar (24 hours)

  • Dissertation Writing Seminar (24 hours)

The Final Examination will follow the guidelines indicated by the national regulations. Details about the Final Exam can be consulted in the “Final Examinations Guidelines” approved by the Graduate School Committee on 24 November 2010 and published at http://www.unitn.it/en/drsis/11111/handbook-and-regulations .

Throughout the three years of the Doctoral Programme students are required to attend the Guest Lectures and other presentations regularly organised by the School of International Studies. These Lectures aremconsidered an integral part of the Doctoral Programme that will help the students to complete their preparation in view of the Comprehensive Exam and the writing of their dissertation.

The Graduate School Committee decides upon admission to the second year of studies. In order to be admitted to the second year, students must have:

  • obtained a passing grade in all first year courses

  • obtained a passing grade in the Comprehensive Exam

  • submitted their preliminary research proposal to their Supervisor and obtained a satisfactory assessment by the end of September of the first year of studies. In order to be admitted to the third year, doctoral students must have:

  • defended their thesis proposal in a public seminar

  • obtained their Supervisor’s formal approval of the thesis proposal and the defence thereof

  • obtained by the end of September of the second year of studies their Supervisor’s satisfactory assessment on the research activity carried out during the fourth semester.

Attachments

Applications must include:

  • a photocopy of the applicant’s identity card or passport (pages with photo, personal data, and the information concerning the issue of the document);

  • degree certificate (or self-certification according to Presidential Decree no. 445 of 28.12.2000 only for EU citizens), as stated in art. 2 of this announcement;

  • a curriculum vitae in English;

  • a research proposal (max 5 pages – 2500 words) in English in one of the areas studied in the International Studies Programme. Candidates are asked to include in their research proposal a short statement (max. 500 words) outlining their reasons for undertaking doctoral research and for choosing international studies at the University of Trento;

  • certificate(s) attesting the knowledge of the English language at least C11 level, in case English is not the candidate’s mother tongue or if the candidate has not graduated from a BA or MA programme entirely taught in English.

Applicants who have a foreign qualification that has not been officially recognized as equivalent to the Italian “laurea” should attach the English translation of the degree certificate with exams taken and grades obtained (Grade Transcript), signed under their own responsibility, to enable the Graduate School Committee to declare its equivalence, valid solely for the purposes of admission to the selection process.
