[Italy] The Graduate Degree In Gastronomy and Food Communication
THE GRADUATE DEGREE IN GASTRONOMY AND FOOD COMMUNICATION
The following are eligible to apply for the Graduate Degree in Gastronomy and Food Communication for the academic year 2007/2008:
- graduates with a degree awarded in the 2006/2007 academic year (by the February extra exam session) in a subject included in the Italian Class 20, i.e. Agricultural Sciences and Technologies, Food Industry and Forestry, provided the candidates have no educational debt
- graduates with a degree awarded in the 2006/2007 academic year (by the February extra exam session) in a subject not included in the Italian Class 20, and having a educational debit not exceeding 30 credits
The appointed academic board will evaluate the admission of candidates from different degree classes and any outstanding educational debt.
Candidates who haven’t obtained first-level academic qualifications yet will be enrolled in the Graduate Degree with a reservation which will be dropped only if the student obtains his or her degree by the extra exam session for the 2006/2007 academic year.
The total number of students to be accepted in the Graduate Degree in Gastronomy and Food
Communication is 40.
Lecture courses will start on January 8, 2008.

Application requirements for final-year university students:
- statement or list of passed exams with marks on a point basis with a maximum grade of 30,
credits earned and relevant subjects. Selections will be made considering the exams passed
and marked by November 2007; - candidate’s résumé;
- motivation letter;
- language proficiency certificates, if any. Application requirements for graduate students:
- certificate stating the degree grade, including the list of passed exams and relevant grade marked on a point basis with a maximum grade of 30, credits earned and relevant subjects;
- candidate’s résumé;

- Non-Italian candidates
Application requirements from final-year university students
- declaration of equivalent value including a certificate stating the degree grade; list of passed exams and grades marked on a point basis with a maximum grade of 30, credits earned and relevant subjects

- certificates stating any extra-curricular activities carried out in food- and gastronomy-related
areas
No university career information is required from candidates who have graduated from the University of Gastronomic Sciences. They can enroll in the Graduate Degree in Gastronomy and Food Communication simply by completing an application, provided they have obtained a first-level degree in Gastronomic Sciences by February 2008.
- Language requirements
Non-Italian candidates will have to provide:
- Italian university degree or high-school diploma or:
- one of the B1-level or higher Italian internationally recognized certificates or:
- B1-level or higher exam in Italian passed during a university degree course
Except for English native speakers, all candidates are required to have obtained a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) certificate.
Students who have not obtained this certificate at the beginning of the 2007/2008 academic year have until August 2008 to do so.
Language proficiency is a compulsory requirement, as lecture courses will be held in either Italian or English and no simultaneous translation services will be available.
Likewise, textbooks will be made available in either Italian or English.
Exams will be held in either Italian or English, according to the lecturer’s decision.
Students can choose between Italian or English for their degree thesis and discussion.
Students failing to obtain the above-required language certificate within the stated date will be
prevented from joining any academic activities abroad, as stated in the curriculum.

DEADLINES
A two-installment fee payment is scheduled:
- first installment to be paid no later than December 21, 2007
- second installment to be paid no later than May 30, 2008
Students who pay the total university fee amount by December 21, 2007 will be granted a reduction of €250.
Final-year students enrolled with reservation in the Graduate Degree are required to pay the first fee installment by the stated deadline of December 21, 2007. Should they fail to obtain a degree within the extra exam session of February 2008, the reservation will not be dropped. In this case, the university will partially refund the student the amount paid for the first installment, deducting respectively
- €2,000 if the student has used the Student Lodging or the Restaurant Serivce €1,000 if the student has decided to renounce both services
Following the enrollment in the Graduate Degree, students who decide to use Student Lodging from January 8, 2008 instead of October 1, 2007, will have to pay €4,000 instead of €5,000.
Furthermore, first-year students of the Graduate Degree are requested to inform the university about their decision to use or renounce Student Lodging accommodation for the second year of the course, using the form that will be issued in due course.
Students of all nationalities enrolled in the Graduate Degree can apply for one of four scholarships for university fee exemption, each one amounting to €9,000.
Income and merit requirements for students to apply for scholarships will be detailed in the official individual announcements.
Furthermore, EU students whether scholarship recipients or not, can apply for a merit-based loan of €10,000, granted by Banca Intesa San Paolo according to the terms stated on the
website www.intesabridge.it.
ONLINE APPLICATIONS
- Applications for the Graduate Degree in Gastronomy and Food Communication for the
2007/2008 academic year will be accepted from July 2, 2007. - Students wishing to apply must complete the application form online and produce the documents stated above by the deadline of November 30, 2007.
ENROLLMENT
By December 11, 2007, the Academic Board will inform each candidate on the status of their
application. Successful candidates to the Graduate Degree can complete the matriculation process by paying the first installment of university fees.
Successful final-year university students are enrolled with reservation, which will be dropped if they graduate by February 2008. Successful candidates already enrolled in postgraduate specialization courses at other Italian universities are enrolled with reservation. In order to remove the reservations, the regularly enrolled successful candidate will have to apply for a transfer to the university he or she is enrolled at and provide the Registrar’s Office of the University of Gastronomic Sciences with receipt of application. Successful candidates enrolled in a postgraduate specialization course at another university can ask for any exams passed during the second-level curriculum to be acknowledged, by handing in their transfer application filed at the other university and a certificate stating the exams passed and the relevant programs.
