[New Zealand] PhD Scholarship in Enzyme Evolution Institute of Molecular Biosciences
PhD Scholarship in Enzyme Evolution Institute of Molecular Biosciences
Auckland, New Zealand
Project Details: Applications are invited for a PhD under the supervision of Dr Wayne Patrick. We are interested in understanding the origins of new enzymes and metabolic pathways, and in applying the lessons learnt to problems such as bioremediation and the evolution of antibiotic resistance. Your project will involve applying the modern tools of biochemistry and “big” biology (functional genomics, metagenomics, directed evolution and high-throughput screening) to observe and manipulate the evolution of new catalytic functions in the model bacterium, Escherichia coli.
Our preliminary investigations in this area are described in: Patrick et al. (2007) Mol. Biol. Evol., 24, 2716-2722. More information is also available at http://www.massey.ac.nz/~wpatrick/
Eligibility: Applicants should have a background in biochemistry, evolutionary biology, microbiology or related subjects. This research is supported by the Marsden Fund of New Zealand.
Stipend: The stipend is NZ$25,000 per annum (tax-free), plus University enrolment fees.
More Infomation: Requests for further information about the Massey PhD programme or potential projects should be directed to Dr. Patrick (w.patrick(AT)massey.ac.nz).
Apply: Applications for the scholarship should be emailed to the same address, and should include a brief cover letter stating why you are interested in this project, together with a curriculum vitae and the names and contact details of two referees.
Process: The process of reviewing applications will begin in mid-November, 2008, and will continue until the position is filled.
