[United State] Scholarship and Career award - Lighthouse International

Lighthouse International invites applications for our 2007 Scholarship Awards Program. These scholarships reward excellence, recognize accomplishments and help students who are blind or partially sighted achieve their career goals.

There are four categories and each carries a $5,000 prize:

  • College-bound Award, for high school seniors or recent high school graduates now planning to begin college
  • Undergraduate Award I, for college students who may apply at any time during their undergraduate studies
  • Undergraduate Award II, for college students pursuing an undergraduate degree after an absence of ten years or more from high school or from an accredited undergraduate program; students may apply at any time immediately prior to, or during, their course of study
  • Graduate Award, for college graduates or college seniors planning to pursue a graduate-level program; candidates may apply at any time immediately prior to, or during, their course of study

Winners will be invited to attend the Scholarships & Career Awards Luncheon at Lighthouse International headquarters on Thursday, June 7, 2007.

Criteria
Applicants must be legally blind (i.e., have a best corrected visual acuity of 20/200 or less in the better eye, and/or a visual field of less than 20 degrees). Scholarships are based on academic and other achievements, and candidates are not required to demonstrate financial need.

Applicants must be US citizens, and reside and attend school in any of the following states: CT, DE, FL, GA, MA, MD, ME, NC, NH, NJ, NY, PA, RI, SC, VA, WV and VT, or Washington, DC. Proof of citizenship will be required of all winners.

Previous winners (in any category) of Lighthouse Scholarships, current Lighthouse employees and members of their immediate families are ineligible.

Application Procedure
Each candidate must submit the following five items:

  • Completed Lighthouse Scholarships application form
  • Typewritten and double-spaced personal essay, not exceeding 500 words, summarizing academic achievement and career goals; please include study interests and extra-curricular activities
  • Documentation of current legal blindness verifying the applicant’s vision impairment; the statement may come from an ophthalmologist, optometrist or State Rehabilitation Agency
  • Documentation of academic record and current school status; include most recent transcripts and letter of acceptance into chosen school or study program, when available
  • Letters of recommendation from two persons other than family members

All materials must be assembled by the applicant and forwarded in one envelope to the Lighthouse by March 2, 2007.

Candidates are judged by representatives from the academic and business communities, along with members of the Lighthouse Women’s Committee. Judges’ decisions are final. The Lighthouse reserves the right to withhold awards in any category in the absence of qualified applicants. Please note that awards are considered taxable income.
