[Scotland] New PhD Scholarships in Arts and Divinity – The University of St Andrews

St Andrews is Scotland’s First University, and the Faculty of Arts has six hundred years of tradition and scholarship to draw upon. With the development of financial support and new facilities we are strengthening our position as one of the leading Universities in which to conduct research.

The University of St Andrews is committed to expanding its research postgraduate population in the Faculties of Arts and Divinity. We wish to recruit the best scholars from all over the world to be part of our thriving research culture and work alongside the many academics of international reputation within the University.

We are offering 46 scholarships equivalent to waiving the home fee (currently £3,168) for three years across the following Schools & specialisms:

Art History
Three scholarships to work in any area of European and American Art and Architectural History or Museum and Gallery Studies.

Classics
Three scholarships, with preference given to research connected with the Classics Logos Centre for study of systems of knowledge by which Greeks and Romans organised their understanding and description of the world. (Other fields of research will be considered.)

Divinity
Three scholarships from: Theology; Theology, Imagination and the Arts; Biblical Studies (Old Testament/Hebrew Bible, New Testament, and related areas such as Second Temple Judaism.

Economics and Finance
Three scholarships available for studies in two of our core areas, International Strategy & Economics; and Finance as well as research themes lying within the scope of the CRIEFF and CDMA research centres.

English
Five scholarships from any area of literature or creative writing.

Geography (Human)
Two scholarships from the core areas of Population, Health and Welfare. Preference may be given to research related to ongoing projects of: Migration and diaspora: globalisation and transnationalism; Low fertility, population ageing and population decline; Geographies of health, homelessness and human rights.

History
Nine scholarships from any area of History.

International Relations
Three scholarships from: Conflict, terrorism and political violence; International institutions; Regional politics and security.

Management and Business Studies
Four Scholarships in the areas of social, environmental and sustainability accounting; strategy and marketing; organisational studies; banking and finance and creative industries.

Modern Languages
Five scholarships, one in each of: French, German, Italian, Russian and Spanish. Applications are particularly encouraged in: Cultural identity studies; The linguistics of the languages of Europe.

Philosophy
Three scholarships in any area of Philosophy and its history,or Film Studies.

Social Anthropology
Three scholarships in any area of social anthropology. The department would particularly welcome applications from students from developing nations of the South. More information about Social Anthropology Scholarships can be downloaded here.

These awards may be held concurrently with AHRB and ORS scholarships.

In addition, the University is investing in new postgraduate residential accommodation in the development of David Russell Hall as well as the existing town centre sites of Deans Court and Gannochy.

Individual Schools have facilities for postgraduates, and we are also creating between 120 and 160 individual desk spaces for Arts postgraduates in and around St Salvator’s Quadrangle and Deans Court, in addition to the existing provision in the Roundel for Divinity students.
