[Canada] Scholarship for Graduate African at Dalhousie University
South African Student Education Project (SASEP) - Information for Applicants
Funding for Master’s Degree for Black South Africans at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada
SASEP Scholarship Information
The South African Student Education Project (SASEP) at Dalhousie University provides scholarship support to black South African citizens who wish to study for a one- or two-year Master’s degree at Dalhousie. SASEP provides this opportunity so that students, after completing their degrees, can return to South Africa and further contribute to the development of their country.
Normally, support is provided for one to two years (depending on the program of study) at a rate comparable to Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) scholarships. This support includes funding for tuition fees, books, winter clothing, installation, thesis expenses, medical insurance, and return airfare from South Africa, as well as a monthly living allowance.
The scholarship is administered by a Dalhousie unit, Lester Pearson International, and is an outgrowth of cooperation with the Southern Africa Education Trust Fund which, up to October 1994, was based in Ottawa, Canada. SASEP is now fully funded by members of the Dalhousie community. To date, eleven students from South Africa have earned graduate degrees from Dalhousie with SASEP support.
Application Process
Applications are currently being accepted for two scholarship opportunities, for admission to Master’s programs commencing in September 2008. Interested students must first visit the Dalhousie University Graduate Studies website (http://www.dalgrad.dal.ca) to see if they qualify for graduate admission to Dalhousie. Basic requirements for admission to Dalhousie’s Masters programmes can be found at http://www.dalgrad.dal.ca/regulations/ii/#2.2. Interested students must also visit the website of the department in which they are interested (http://www.dalgrad.dal.ca/programs/), as many departments have additional admission requirements.
Once eligibility for admission has been established, interested applicants should download the Graduate Calendar, detailed admissions information and guidelines, and the three-part Graduate Application for Admission Form from http://www.dalgrad.dal.ca/admissions/. Please note that the Graduate Application for Admission Form also serves as the application for the SASEP Scholarship, and that those applying will not be responsible for the application fee.
Applications should be placed in an envelope clearly marked “SASEP Scholarship Application”, and sent to Lester Pearson International at the address below, by 15 January 2008. Please note that all three copies of the Graduate Application for Admission form should be sent to LPI. Sealed, endorsed letters of reference may be included with the application form, or sent directly by referees to LPI. Academic transcripts should be sent directly by the applicant’s university to LPI.
Applications from qualified students will then be reviewed by relevant academic and administrative units and a SASEP steering committee.
