[UK] Fully Funded MSc PhD in Medical and Biological Engineering

A four year High-End Computing (HEC) PhD studentship is available within the Medical and Biological Engineering research group at the University of Hull, led by Professor MJ Fagan, in collaboration with the Hull-York Medical School.

The studentship includes an interleaved masters programme in high performance computing, providing a rare opportunity for the student to obtain both an MSc in Scientific Computing and a PhD in Medical Engineering.

The training, provided by the Centre for Scientific Computing at the University of Warwick, covers the development and application of high-end computing techniques applied to problems in science and engineering. The modules include scientific programming, especially for high performance computers, visualization, parallel and Grid computing, and the development and optimization of numerical algorithms etc.

The research project is concerned with bone biomechanics, and the further development and application of our unique voxel-based finite element software, that can model bone structures at a very high resolution. This software allows whole bones to be modelled including the internal trabecular bone detail, with sophisticated loading tools and adaptive remodelling capabilities.

The successful applicant will ideally possess a first class or upper second honours degree in Biology, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or Physics, or closely related discipline. S/he will be working in a very exciting emerging area of multi-disciplinary research integrating anatomy, biology, computing and engineering, and through the MSc+PhD will obtain an extensive and highly-desirable skill set.

This studentship covers the cost of home fees plus maintenance (at the standard UK research council level).

Please contact Professor Michael Fagan (m.j.fagan@hull.ac.uk) for informal enquiries.

The closing date for applications is 5th June 2009.
