Funding Opportunities For Postgraduate Research Students
The Graduate School has an outstanding record in attracting financial support for its growing body of research students. The funding possibilities may include:
- College Studentships (for PhD study only): pay fees at Home/EU rate plus stipend, renewable for up to 3 years
- College Scholarships (for PhD study only): pay fees only at home/EU rates, renewable for up to 3 years
- School scholarships (for PhD study only): pay fees at Home/EU rates, renewable for up to 3 years
- Centre for Centre for Narrative & Auto / Biographical Studies (for PhD study only): pay fees at Home/EU rate plus stipend, renewable for up to 3 years
- ESRC studentships (1+3 and +3): fees plus stipend for MSc(R) + PhD. (Home/EU applicants only; stipend normally paid only to UK students.) Renewable for 3 or 4 years.
- ORS awards: partial fees for overseas students (for PhD study only). University awards may be available to ‘top-up’ ORS awards to cover full fee costs for overseas students. Renewable up to 3 years.
How to apply for funding
Before being eligible for any of these postgraduate research awards you must have applied for admission to the PhD programme. You will therefore need to complete a Graduate School application form, which can be downloaded from our How to Apply pages.

Overseas Research Student (ORS) Awards
Candidates liable to pay the overseas fee, who apply for a College award, are expected to apply also for an Overseas Research Student (ORS) award. These awards cover the difference between the tuituion fees for an overseas postgraduate student and those charged to UK students. Information and application forms for ORS awards can be downloaded from the scholarships website.
Alternatively forms can be requested by email from the College of Humanities and Social Science Postgraduate Office, e-mail: hsspg@ed.ac.uk.
ESRC and AHRC Awards
If you wish to be considered for an ESRC or AHRC Award, you need to prepare your application with the help of the Postgraduate Adviser and your potential Supervisor in your intended subject area (Contact Details).
- ESRC Application Forms can be downloaded from the ESRC website.
- AHRC Application Forms can be downloaded from the AHRC website.
Deadline: Those wishing to be considered for ESRC or AHRC awards must have submitted their application for admission to the PhD by 21st March at the very latest. ESRC and AHRC applications for competition awards normally have to be submitted to the Councils by 1 May, but successful applicants should aim to complete their sections of the form by 15 April.
School of Social and Political Studies Awards
- School scholarships (for PhD study only): pay fees at Home/EU rates, renewable for up to 3 years
- Centre for Centre for Narrative & Auto / Biographical Studies (for PhD study only): pay fees at Home/EU rate plus stipend, renewable for up to 3 years
Awards now available for Home/EU or International Applicants

Criteria
Funding is awarded on the basis of academic merit and research potential. Candidates require a First-Class or very good upper second honours degree (or equivalent). An MSc qualification may also be an advantage.
Applicants for all awards must have an offer of a place on the PhD programme to be eligible. It is therefore important to have submitted an application for admission to the degree at least four weeks ahead of the funding deadlines.
