[UK] Phd Scholarship at Lancaster University
PhD CASE Studentship in Particle Methods for Image Processing, Estimation and Navigation
Department of Communication Systems Lancaster University
This studentship is available for UK and EU students who have or expect to obtain the equivalent of a first or upper second Honours degree, or an MSc in a relevant discipline. Eligible candidates must hold a UK passport or have been ordinarily resident in the UK throughout the 3 year period preceding the date of application for the studentship. Students with a relevant connection to an EU country other than the UK are eligible for fees only. However, an EU candidate may be eligible for a full award if a relevant connection with the UK has been established.
For further information regarding the eligibility criteria, please visit the EPSRC Website (www.epsrc.ac.uk).
Lancaster University’s Department of Communication Systems is pleased to invite applications for an EPSRC-funded studentship, which is in collaboration with QinetiQ, one of the UK leading companies in science and technology.
After being proposed in the 90th the particle based methods (called also Monte Carlo techniques or particle filtering) received a vast attention and have been applied to many areas. Research is concentrated on both theoretical level (e.g., investigations of convergence properties, accuracy analysis) and on application oriented level. This PhD project will focus on the development of novel particle based methods and their performance investigation. Depending on the background of the candidates the application that will be considered will be in the area of image processing or/ or in navigation systems. Between the problems that will be investigated are motion estimation and classification in image/video sequences, motion estimation from large amount of sensor data. Due to the stochastic and highly nonlinear character of such systems, methods able to deal with various types of uncertainties will be investigated.
The studentship will be supervised by Dr Mila Mihaylova (Lancaster University) and it is anticipated that the student will be based at Lancaster University, offering a highly collegiate and stimulating environment for research career development as well as undertaking a programme of original research, the student will receive training in mathematics, probabilistic methods, statistical modelling and image processing. This is an excellent opportunity to join a vibrating team and conduct a high-level research. The studentship will provide fees plus a stipend in line with current research council studentships (currently £12,600 per annum). The studentship will commence as soon as possible.
The closing date for applications is 17th December, 2007.
