PhD Studentship Inclusive Design and Data Visualisation

Project summary:
An EPSRC PhD studentship is available at the Institute of Human-Centred Design, School of Engineering and Design, Brunel University. The research project aims to explore effective means of presenting ergonomics data for inclusive design practitioners. The major research tasks include:

  • to identify the barriers to wider uptake of inclusive design
  • to investigate how designers use ergonomics data and information
  • to build a database of ergonomics most relevant to inclusive design
  • to capture industry requirements of knowledge management tools for inclusive design and develop specifications for design support
  • to explore effective means of presenting ergonomics data
  • to develop a design support tool, integrating ergonomics with a focus on anthropometric data.
  • to carry out evaluation of the design support with design students and professional designers


Conditions:
The applicant should have a very good first degree in Design, Ergonomics, Engineering, Management Science or Computer Science, although exceptional candidates with other backgrounds will be considered. Applicants with a Master’s degree are preferable. The candidate should expect to undertake systematic literature analysis, interviews with professional designers, analysis of qualitative and quantitative data, database design, development and evaluation of design support tools. Good communication skills and team work ability are advantages.

Duration, start date:
The duration will be three years. The start date is expected to be in April, 2008.

The Scholarship:
This PhD studentship is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The studentship covers tuition fees at the home student rate, and three-year maintenance expenses at a standard London rate. This studentship is open to overseas students, but it will not cover the difference between the tuition fee for a UK/EU graduate student and that chargeable to an overseas graduate student.
