[UK] PhD Studentship in Biophotonic Engineering at University of Sheffield

PhD Studentship in Biophotonic Engineering: Optical coherence tomography of tissue-engineered cartilage
Department of Engineering Materials, University of Sheffield

A 3-year EPSRC-funded PhD studentship in biophotonic imaging is available from February 2008 in the 5*-rated Dept of Engineering Materials, University of Sheffield, working in the group of Dr Steve Matcher. The project involves the development of polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography as a tool for monitoring the 3 D organisation of collagen within native and tissue-engineered articular cartilage.

Working alongside a post-doctoral research assistant, the student will take responsibility for the development, optimisation and validation of data inversion algorithms. A keen interest in computer modelling, data analysis and optics is needed, as is a general interest in biomechanics and tissue engineering. Training in complimentary techniques such as diffusion-tensor Magnetic Resonance Imaging will also be available. The work will benefit from collaboration with colleagues in the cartilage-engineering group, Centre for Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering.

Applicants should hold or expect to obtain a first degree (UK upper second class or equivalent minimum) or a Masters degree in physics, materials, electronic engineering or a related discipline. Candidates from the UK and EU will be eligible for full funding which includes tuition fees and stipend. As some travel may be necessary, a driving licence valid in the UK would be advantageous.
