[UK] PhD Studentship in Design Optimisation of Solidification Processing Equipment – Brunel University

PhD Studentship in Design Optimisation of Solidification Processing Equipment
Research into Solidification & Castings Technologies
Brunel University

Applications from suitable candidates are invited for a PhD studentship available in BCAST (Brunel Centre for Advanced Solidification Technology) at Brunel University and sponsored by the EPSRC. The studentship is for 3 years and covers both tuition fees and bursaries. The bursaries can be up to £14,000 pa (tax free). Please note that only UK candidates are eligible for both fees and bursaries, EU candidates are eligible for fees only, and candidates from other countries have to be self-funded for both fees and bursaries.

BCAST is an academic research centre focusing on solidification research with an international reputation. BCAST currently comprises of 28 research staff and 5 supporting staff. Our research covers structures and properties of metallic liquids, nucleation control through both chemical and physical means, alloy development and technological innovation. BCAST is also well equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for both solidification processing and materials characterisation. See http://bcast.brunel.ac.uk for more information.

The successful candidate will be expected to work in the area of design optimisation of our newly developed casting equipment for processing of aluminium and/or magnesium based alloys by intensive melt shearing. He/she will carry out systematic thermal and mechanical analysis on the existing design and to optimise each of the functional units for improved functional performance, energy efficiency and the reduced manufacturing cost. A solid knowledge base in mechanical engineering is essential, and experience in thermal and mechanical analysis is desirable.
