[UK] PhD Studentship in Surface Engineering at Manchester Metropolitan University
PhD Studentship in Surface Engineering
Surface Engineering Group, Manchester Metropolitan University
The Dalton Research Institute at Manchester Metropolitan University invites applications for a fully funded EPSRC PhD studentship in Surface Engineering. Applicants should have, or would be expected to gain, a first or upper second-class degree or MSc in a materials, physics, engineering or chemistry – related subject. Studentships are for three and a half years full-time and are only available to Home and EU candidates (full details of eligibility criteria can be found on the EPSRC website: http://www.epsrc.ac.uk).
Project ref. SE3: Pulsed Plasmas for the Production of High Performance Coatings
Pulsed processing has initiated a new era in surface engineering technologies. For example, pulsed magnetron sputtering has transformed the deposition of dielectric materials. The benefits of pulsed processing can also be applied to the production of a wide range of other materials including nano-composite anti-microbial coatings, coatings for dry machining operations and high quality functional coatings on flexible substrates. This project will perform a detailed study of this technique, with a view to producing high performance coatings for commercially important applications. This studentship attracts an EPSRC stipend of approximately £13,900 per annum.
Start Date: February 2008
Closing date for applications: 7th January 2008
The experimental programme will take place primarily in the Surface Engineering Laboratory at MMU under the supervision of Prof Peter Kelly. This lab is fully equipped with state-of-the-art deposition and analysis facilities.
