[UK] PhD studentships – Grassland soils research

PhD studentships – Grassland soils research (3 positions available)
A cluster of three PhD studentships is available, focusing on developing a mechanistic understanding of optimal ways to manage organic matter in pastures in order to optimise nutrient cycling and minimise environmental impacts. The individual projects are:

Assessing the balance between greenhouse gas and ammonia emissions from Irish pastures under various N-management regimes

Carbon and nitrogen dynamics in animal slurries: impact of slurry pre-treatment and soil conditions

Interactions between biodiversity and survival of microbial pathogens in soil

The cluster is based within an alliance between Teagasc, the Irish Agriculture and Food Development Authority, Johnstown Castle and the National Soil Resources Institute, Cranfield University, UK.

Students will be academically registered at Cranfield and involve supervisory teams from both organisations. The programmes of work will be carried out at both institutions according to need.

The studentships, whilst independent, form a coherent programme that complement the wider portfolios of research at both Teagasc and Cranfield. To informally discuss the projects, contact Professor Karl Ritz, k.ritz@cranfield.ac.uk or Dr Rogier Schulte, rogier.schulte@teagasc.ie

Entry requirements
