[UK] The Master of Research (MRes) Scholarship - University of Plymouth

The Faculty of Arts will award this University Postgraduate Taught
Scholarship (PGT USS) to an eligible candidate starting his/her programme
of study in October 2007.

Eligibility:
To be eligible for this Scholarship, applicants must be offered and accept a full-time place on one of the following programmes for the academic year 2007/8:

  • MRes Architectural History
  • MRes Art & Technology
  • MRes Art History
  • MRes Design Thinking
  • MRes English
  • MRes History
  • MRes Landscape
  • MRes Theatre & Performance
  • MRes Utopian Studies

The successful applicant will have his/her fees paid (full time, UK/EU only) for one year. Non-UK/EU candidates are eligible for the Scholarship but must make up the difference in fees. If this applies to you, then you must confirm in your application to the programme of study that you are able to meet this obligation.

Criteria:
The Selection Panel will consider the information and evidence provided about your ability, aptitude, commitment and preparedness for postgraduate study, and the quality of work you are likely to produce based on this evidence.

Selection will be based on evidence of the following:

  • a good first degree or equivalent in a subject related to your programme of study;
  • your potential to develop research skills;
  • critical engagement and self-awareness;
  • a sense of the ways in which the specific MRes programme will support your scholarly, professional, and/or creative development.

These criteria will be evidenced through the following:

  • personal statement, achievements and experience as outlined on your application form to the programme of study;
  • your proposal, sample of critical writing and/or evidence of creative/professional practice submitted within your programme application.
  • your references;
  • a supporting report by the Programme Manager or Admissions tutor.

Applications will be assessed on a competitive basis to reflect academic merit. We are concerned not only with the viability and quality of the application but also with its relevance and potential contribution to our research communities.

There is no application form. All candidates who have been offered and have accepted a place on a Faculty of Arts MRes programme by the deadline below will be considered for this Scholarship.

The Selection Panel will consider no additional material from the candidate beyond the application form for the programme of study and any requested supplementary material submitted in support of this application.

Deadline:
To be eligible for this Scholarship, candidates must have accepted their place on a Faculty of Arts MRes programme in writing by 12 noon on Monday 2 July 2007.

It is the candidate’s responsibility to ensure that this notification has been received by this deadline.

To ensure that a place may be offered and accepted within this timeframe, applications to the programme of study must be made by 8 June 2007. Please note that some MRes programmes require interviews prior to acceptance.

Notes:

  • The Faculty will endeavour to notify all candidates of the outcome of the Scholarship competition by 30 July 2007.
  • Candidates who are not successful in the Scholarship competition may opt to change their enrolment from full-time to part-time.
  • If the Selection Panel is unable to award a Scholarship to an MRes candidate for any reason, the Faculty may instead award a Scholarship to a suitably qualified candidate who has been accepted for a place on a comparable programme.
  • If the successful candidate is also successful in the AHRC research preparation masters competition, s/he is expected to decline the this Scholarship offer, which will then be offered to another suitably qualified candidate.
