Risk Based Maintenance/Inspection for Power Plants
Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries, Institute of Industrial Research
The Institute of Industrial Research at the University of Portsmouth has received another prestigious Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) grant funded by the DTI for over £100k. This will fund a project with a company called European Technology Development Ltd based in Leatherhead, Surrey. ETD is a highly innovative engineering and consulting company engaged in state of the art R&D and product development in the energy sector (www.etd1.co.uk).
This has created an exciting opportunity for a graduate with an interest in the application of Artificial Intelligence techniques to Power Plant integrity assessment. This is a two-year development programme that could lead to a postgraduate qualification and further employment at ETD.
Knowledge Transfer Partnerships enable recently qualified people (known as KTP Associates) to work in companies managing challenging projects central to their development needs (see www.ktponline.org.uk).
Basis of the research: The purpose of the job is for an Associate to develop an intelligent Risk Based Maintenance/Inspection (RBM/RBI) software package, including a database, for power plant engineers and maintenance staff to evaluate and optimise plant inspection/maintenance programmes.
The role of KTP Associate: Two years funding is available for a graduate with a good first degree and a strong interest in mechanical/materials engineering with knowledge of software design and development. Applicants should apply only if they are interested in investigating the application of advanced techniques of assessing power plant integrity and remaining life. The Associate will be based at the company but will work closely with the Institute of Industrial Research at the University and there is a possibility of an overseas placement.
