[UK] Wingate Scholarships 2008-2009 in UK
Wingate Scholarships are awarded to individuals of great potential or proven excellence who need financial support to undertake pioneering or original work of intellectual, scientific, artistic, social or environmental value, and to outstandingly talented musicians for advanced training.
They are designed to help with the costs of a specific project which may last up to 3 years. The average total award is about £6,500 and the maximum in any one year is £10,000.
There is no upper age limit and the Scholarship Committee welcomes applications from mature candidates and those from non-traditional academic backgrounds. Wingate Scholarships attempts to provide funding for cross-disciplinary projects that might not fall comfortably into any of the conventional funding categories.
N. B. Previous recipients of Wingate Scholarships are not eligible to apply.
APPLICANTS (for 2008/2009) MUST BE:
- living in the British Isles during the period of application (this applies to all applicants)
- able to satisfy the Scholarship Committee that they need financial support to undertake the work projected
- able to show why the project (if it takes the form of academic research) is unlikely to attract Research Council, British Academy or major agency funding
- citizens of the United Kingdom or other Commonwealth country, Ireland or Israel
- or citizens of another EU country (provided that they have been resident in the United Kingdom at least 3 years on September 1 2008)
- aged 24 or over on September 1 2008
The Scholarships Committee Selection panel will use the following three basic criteria when assessing applications:
- that the project is of high quality
- that the candidate has the motivation and ability to carry it out
- that there is genuine financial need
Provided the application complies with all the criteria above, the Selection panel will be looking for candidates and projects that demonstrate one or more of the following priorities:
- that they show an unusual degree of creativity
- that they display exceptional originality
- that their work is of benefit to society and/or their own career progress
- that their circumstances are unusual or that they have overcome particular difficulties
Wingate Scholars whose awards run for more than one year must submit to the Administrator at the end of each year a brief progress report and, where appropriate, written confirmation from a supervisor that their studies are proceeding satisfactorily. Any changes to a project or financial situation during the course of a scholarship must be reported immediately to the Administrator.
At the end of their tenure, Wingate Scholars are required to write a Final Report summarising their achievements (in not more than 1500 words) for the benefit of the Scholarship Committee.
