The Council on Foreign Relations is the nation’s premier foreign policy organization. It is dedicated to improving understanding of U.S. foreign policy. The Council does this by convening events with prominent world leaders, through cutting-edge research, through publishing the preeminent foreign policy publication, Foreign Affairs, and through its award-winning website, cfr.org, considered one of the best resources for on-line foreign policy information. The Council is headquartered in New York City, with a dynamic office in heart of the nation’s capital.
The Council’s Studies Program is one of the country’s largest foreign policy think tanks. Its widely respected and influential research staff of more than 50 scholars advances the discussion of American foreign policy and international affairs through their research, writing, and public outreach. As part of the Studies Program, the Research Associate will work under the direction of two Senior Fellows, focusing primarily on projects related to the South Asiaregion. The major responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
- Researching specific areas as requested by the Fellows. Tracking news and data sources on major international issues.
- Assisting with the drafting, proofreading and editing of articles, book chapters, and other written material, under the direction of the Fellows.
- Handling writing assignments, including summaries of research and business writing.
- Providing administrative support to the Fellows, including answering telephones, handling correspondence, filing, and responding to requests for information.
- Coordinating events, including arranging mailings, preparing invitations, making travel arrangements, scheduling, corresponding with speakers and presiders, helping to prepare background papers and materials for distribution, and providing other logistical support.
- Managing budgets, including preparing budgets and tracking monthly statements, creating and updating Excel spreadsheets, and preparing vouchers for reimbursement.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Degree in International Relations or Political Science, with high academic achievement; significant coursework and/or experience inSouth Asia region required
- Excellent research, writing, and editing skills
- 1+ years related administrative or internship experience
- Strong organizational skills and high attention to detail
- Spoken and written skills in a language of the region preferred
- Excellent computer skills, including MS Word, Excel, Lotus Notes, and the Internet
