[United States] The W.K. McClure Fund for the Study of World Affairs at University of Tennessee
The W.K. McClure Fund for the Study of World Affairs, established in 1968 at the University of Tennessee by Wallace McClure, a graduate of the University of Tennessee, and the Trustees of the William Kyle McClure Foundation, annually offers a fellowship competition coordinated for the University by the Center for International Education. Designed to recognize outstanding academic achievement and to support further study, the fellowships consist of cash grants which can be used for research projects or specific study programs, normally conducted abroad. Grants are not usually awarded to provide tuition for on-campus University of Tennessee degree programs.
The purpose of the W.K. McClure Fund for the Study of World Affairs is to enhance and promote education for world responsibility. Initially conceived to heighten expertise in the area of international law, the program has been broadened to include any study program which offers potential for the development of insights and knowledge relative to significant problems associated with world affairs and the reduction of international conflict, principally through legal, political, economic, social and scientific studies.
Stipend
Normally between $1,000.00 and $3,000.00.
Eligibility
Open to full-time graduate or undergraduate students enrolled in an approved course of study at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Undergraduate applicants must be at least second semester juniors at the time of application. McClure grants may not be used by students enrolling in a non UT, degree granting program (such as an M.Phil at a British institution) or an MA program offered by another US institution for study abroad. Grants for travel to a student’s home country will ordinarily not be made unless there is a clearly documented cross- cultural agenda in the research proposal.
Criteria
Academic achievement: study or experience which focuses upon the affairs of major regions of the world; scholarly merits of the proposal; and potential contribution to the international community through professional service or scholarly activity. Awards will only be given for projects which begin after the McClure interviews are held. All fellows are expected to submit a written report describing the manner in which they utilized the McClure scholarship upon their return.
Awards
Fellowships will be announced in April. The McClure will be awarded upon the recommendation of a faculty committee. The faculty committee will conduct a preliminary review of applications, and then selected applicants will be invited to interview with the committee in March. Awards will be made without regard to the nationality or resident status of the applicant.
