[USA] AASFE Diversity Fellowships 2007
The American Association of Sunday and Feature Editors’ membership is committed to developing newsroom staffs representative of the multicultural communities it serves today. Toward this goal, AASFE will award Diversity Fellowships to talented journalists of color to attend its 61th annual conference, September 2007, in Savannah, Ga.
Fellowships are awarded to writers, editors and copy editors in the United States and Canada who work in features departments, or those interested in pursuing careers in features. The AASFE conference offers a wonderful chance to learn about what’s happening in features departments nationwide.
Fellows get the chance to meet and network with outstanding journalists who specialize in lifestyles coverage. They also participate in multimedia storytelling opportunities during the conference. And, in order to pass along what they learn at the AASFE conference, fellows will be asked to conduct a brown-bag seminar when they return to their news organizations.
To apply for a 2007 Diversity Fellowship, applicants must submit SIX copies each of:
- An essay of no more than 1,000 words explaining your interest in the fellowship, your definition of alternative storytelling and your perspective about the future of features sections.
- A resume
- Two professional letters of recommendation
- Writers must submit five stories demonstrating a versatile writing style
- Editors must submit five samples of sections or pages with comments on how stories were generated and/or edited
- Copy editors must submit five samples of work (three headlines with stories attached; and two stories with editing comments)
Applicants also must submit one publishable photo.
Photos will not be returned. Fellowship applications must be postmarked by May 1, 2007.
Selections will be announced in June 2007.
Deadline: May 1, 2007
